BioWare Announces Dragon Age II or is it Mass Effect: Dragon Age?

Yesterday BioWare released the fine news that Dragon Age II will be coming out next year. March 2011 to be exact. What did this do to the staff of Polish the Console? Well we went positively crazy with delight. We actually thought about stopping work at our real jobs to begin following the releases. Here’s part of the information we have so far (from their website):

You are one of the few who escaped the destruction of your home. Now, forced to fight for survival in an ever-changing world, you must gather the deadliest of allies, amass fame and fortune, and seal your place in history. This is the story of how the world changed forever. The legend of your Rise to Power begins now.

You assume the roll of a man (or woman) named Hawke and begin your decade long epic quest for power. One can rightly assume that (because it’s BioWare) your choices will have a profound impact on how the world around you evolves.

  • Embark upon an all-new adventure that takes place across an entire decade and shapes itself around every decision you make.
  • Determine your rise to power from a destitute refugee to the revered champion of the land.

Oh wait, yeah there it was. They are going to pull off their typical routine.

  • Think like a general and fight like a Spartan with dynamic new combat mechanics that put you right in the heart of battle whether you are a mage, rogue, or warrior.

While I was a fan of the combat system in the last one the constant pausing of the game to make decisions felt somewhat out of place. I never felt like I was not in the heart of battle no matter what character class I had chosen, though. This line interests me. One can only hope they improve upon the battle system making it a tad more engaging from a control scheme stand point while providing a little more potential for strategy outside of “If you health is under 20% take a potion” and “attack a bad guy”. Honestly I don’t have children. I shouldn’t have to explain that to my characters when they are grown ups. Why not have the additional camp level options “If dirty take bath. Wash behind ears” or “lick the sensitive underside” or even “if hungry, then eat”.

  • Discover a whole realm rendered in stunning detail with updated graphics and a new visual style.

That’s nice to see. A game the size and greatness of Dragon Age: Origins was flawed by its less than impressive graphics. While I still and always will love the game it did feel a tad dated at times. It will be nice to see a game like Dragon Age rendered beautifully.

  • Go deeper into the world of Dragon Age with an entirely new cinematic experience that grabs hold of you from the beginning and never lets go.

Here is where we have the problem. Remember before where I said “You assume the roll of a man (or woman) named Hawke…”? Yeah you don’t get to pick race. You have to play as a human in Dragon Age II. Not only that but they went ahead and named him for you. While my names weren’t always the best (I even think I picked one with three Y’s) they were still my names. It was my character. It was an extension of me in a world I cannot live in. That’s what made it fun. Kotaku hit the nail right on the head when they said “Dragon Age II Pulls A Commander Shepard” It’s no longer my taint I have to struggle with but the taint of a person named Hawke. I don’t like Hawke’s taint. It’s not as nice as my taint.

I enjoyed Mass Effect but never really got THAT into Commander Shepard because he was already there. I didn’t feel invested in him. Yes I enjoyed Commander Shepard’s story but it was just that, COMMANDER SHEPARD’S story. I am quite certain BioWare will deliver a game of the same level and caliber that they always do but the beauty and majesty of Dragon Age: Origins started with one simple task that carried through the entire game: picking who you were.  Mass Effect did do this on a smaller scale, but removal of the option to even pick race leaves me feeling a longing.

What if I want to be a dwarf. They are fun. What if their propaganda caused me to hate the Shems? Huh? What then?

Furthermore there are still a number of unanswered questions in Dragon Age: Origins. Seriously BioWare, what the hell happened to Morrigan? She took my baby and ran to the woods. That’s not cool. She didn’t even use a super rad van with a howling wolf mural and shag carpet. No, she just absconded willy nilly with my seed in her. I take issue with that. Unless Hawke winds up being the love child of Morrigan and the Warden we may never find the answer. Unless they continue to wrap up the story with some more DLC.

If you scared Zevran away what became of him? In fact what really became of anyone? Just about every ending with Dragon Age: Origins and Dragon Age: Origins – Awakening was fairly open and seemingly full of mystery and wonder. When will we find an answer to any of them? Where is my Dragon Age: Closure? Feel free to click below to grab some potential Dragon Age II wallpapers.

This kinda looks like the offspring of a Warden and Morrigan right? I mean she's bitter looking.
